(NOTE: This film is primarily spoken in English, with some Shona with subtitles). The book and film are set in war-torn Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the late 1970s and 1980. The narrative is told from the perspective of an eight-year-old white girl named "Bobo" as her family tries to make sense of their unbreakable bond with Africa during the collapse of colonial rule and the violence of the Bush War.
